A word that I once heard used to describe a Burmese cat is
‘interactive’. This is certainly true. They really are a member of
your family; they demand attention and affection and end up ruling your house
and the hearts of all that meet them! Burmese are not only beautiful
cats, strong and athletic yet elegant and graceful, they are also incredibly
intelligent. I was endeared to the breed firstly because of their
stunning appearance and beautiful soft glossy coats however, the qualities of a
Burmese are more than skin deep. From personal experience, you are never
lonely if you have a Burmese in your family. Not only will a Burmese
provide companionship and love but they are also a constant source of
amusement! They are however full of "catitude" and have well deserved
reputations for causing mayhem! Our Burmese for example is quite capable
of opening nearly every door in our house and enlists the help of our beagle
Ellie where she can’t manage on her own! She insists on "helping" with
all of our chores and likes to be a part of everything we do. Thankfully,
Daisy will happily curl up in the boot of our car with the dog and so this
enables us to take Daisy with us when we go on holiday, or visit our friends
and family back home in Gloucestershire.
Burmese, being so intelligent, will often pick up tricks much like a dog.
Daisy will happily play fetch for hours on end and we have even trained her to
bring me my mobile phone when it rings! It is not unheard of for people
to train their Burmese to use a toilet! If you search on YouTube for
Burmese videos, it doesn’t take long to realise just how intelligent (and
sometimes naughty!) they can be.
Burmese are also incredibly vocal cats. They will
quite happily chatter to you and often call out if they want something or can’t
find their humans! A chicken cooking in the oven often provokes an
outburst of song and if Daisy spots any wildlife in the garden she will cackle
noisily! I personally love my cats to voice their opinions but, of
course, this is not for everyone and it is something to bear in mind if you are
considering having a Burmese. A Burmese girl in call is particularly
noisy. We have had many a sleepless nights (and probably most of our
neighbours too) listening to Daisy trying to lure every tom in Tiverton!
If we haven’t put you off and you want to learn more, the
Burmese Cat Club and Cat Society are great places to find out about the breeds
history and characteristics. Please visit our "Useful Links" page to
navigate to their websites. You can also find out more about the variety
of colours that Burmese come in and hear more about how other people have
described this wonderful breed. Personally, I think that once you have
met a Burmese, and particularly if you have ever owned one, you become a fan
for life. We personally could not imagine our family or home without a
Burmese in it!
